Range Rover Velar R DynamicV6-Dartmoor Review

Up-to now the best performance car in the 'Drivers Choice' SUV category was the Porsche Macan and even with the introduction of the RR Velar this is probably still true. However having owned the Macan I can tell your there were times when I needed more space in the car especially when four up. If the Velar had been in production I might well have traded ultimate pace for space because be in no doubt the Velar is a true drivers car!

The most powerful engine currently on offer is the P380 Petrol with 380hp and this is the one I would personally choose but the top diesel, the one we have here, is a 3.0-litre V6 with a healthy 296bhp. It’s pretty refined and provides effortless performance in keeping with the Range Rover image. 0-62mph 6.1 secs. Top Speed 150mph. Economy 45mpg overall. Note though RR engines still not as smooth as the BMW 6 cylinder units especially in diesel guise.

Based on the F Pace with its on road bias, is this car better to drive than the heavier SUV’s RR have produced thus far? On the road the Velar is a truly relaxing place to be, we did over six hundred miles in the car and I would recommend it as a long distance traveller.

On the twisty stuff I found the Velar to be properly sorted even on the standard-fit off-road tyres and the car has precise, expertly weighted and paced steering. The Velar's body movement is extremely well controlled, much better than its bigger siblings, and the car boasts a well-balanced chassis. Both feats make it feel much more like a driver’s car than the current Range Rover Sport.

The car has Comfort, Automatic and Dynamic road-going settings for its active air suspension, but all of them leave it with ride and handling that meet the need for bump compliance, good body control and lasting grip levels in a really progressive way. The Velar glides over the road just as you would want a luxury SUV to, but never seems out of touch with it.
