STORY TRUE STORY
This is a story of Eastern Air Lines Flight 401, a Lockheed L-1011 Tristar, crashed into the Everglades on December 29, 1972, killing 101 people. The flight departed from New York's JFK Airport, bound for Miami International Airport. Approximately 20 miles northwest of Miami, the crew became distracted by a faulty landing gear indicator light, leading to a loss of altitude control.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigation revealed that the crew's preoccupation with the indicator light, combined with inadequate cockpit communication and inadequate monitoring of flight instruments, resulted in the tragic accident. Flight 401's legacy led to significant improvements in aviation safety, including enhanced crew resource management (CRM) training and standardized communication protocols.
