Barbara Hershey recalls shooting Shy People in the Louisiana Bayou and some of her other early films

American star Barbara Hershey has appeared in more than 100 films and TV shows, but few, if any, took her into a more different world than the movie Shy People.
The film is largely set in the Louisiana Bayou and was shot, on locations outside the city of Lafayette, a couple of hours drive from New Orleans.
Barbara won the Best Actress Award at the Cannes Film Festival for her performance in the movie, as a repressed, backwoods woman coping with family dramas and the intrusion of outsiders.
Shy People co-stars Jill Clayburgh and Don Swayze, and was directed by award winning Russian film-maker, Andrei Konchalovsky.
Prior to the film’s shooting Barbara ventured out into Bayou country, to meet some of the local characters and get a sense of the remote swamp and forest locations.
As she explains, in this very relaxed, even leisurely, chat with me and a group of international journalists, it was an eye and ear opening cultural collision for her.
Barbara also talks about Woody Allen, and her films including Hoosiers, Boxcar Bertha and Tin Men, with Danny DeVito and Richard Dreyfus.
Barbara turned 77 earlier this year and is still working in film and television. Her latest film is called Woodstockers, with Corbin Bernsen.
