A live performance of "The Ground to Greensleeves" by the Frary Guitar Duo, Peter and Grace Frary, in the Leeward Theatre (Pearl City, Hawaii).
During the English High Renaissance, improvisations over a repeating bass line or “ground” were all the rage. Greensleeves, like La Folia, was a popular jam tune during this time. The bass pattern was usually short, in our example, 8 measures. This anonymous Elizabethan composer wrote out the divisions—played by Grace—but merely notated a bare-bones 8-measure bass line, expecting the player to fill it out with chords and counterpoint during the repeats. Indeed, I made it up as I played, but striving to keep in the style and interact with the lines played by Grace. This piece was really fun to play!
