Cover crops are a game-changer for improving soil health in vegetable gardens! In this video, we’ll show you how to use cover crops to enrich your soil naturally—without synthetic fertilizers. We planted extra carrot and fenugreek seeds as a cover crop, and now it’s time to put them to work for our next planting season.
First, we carefully cut down the plants and leave them on the surface to decompose, preserving soil structure while adding organic matter. The roots stay underground, breaking down slowly and improving soil fertility. Next, we sprinkle organic rock phosphate, which enhances root growth, flowering, and fruit production. To speed up decomposition, we spread a thin layer of compost, which retains moisture and supports beneficial microbes.
Over the next 10-14 days, microbes and earthworms will transform the cover crop into nutrient-rich soil, ready for planting. This method improves soil structure, retains moisture, suppresses weeds, and reduces the need for chemical fertilizers.
