The national debt is soaring, but so far, politicians from both parities are “addicted to the politics of Santa Claus,” according to economist Jessica Riedl ’98. Riedl, a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute, joined UW economics professor Ananth Seshadri and host Mike Knetter on the UW Now Live on May 13, 2025, to discuss the fiscal policies of the Trump administration and their likely impact on the U.S. economy over the long term. Seshadri lays out the four problems the U.S. economy faces — an aging population, slowing productivity, rising health-care costs, and rising interest payments — and the limited options the government has for dealing with them. Riedl argues that the government will have to both raise taxes and limit spending to make any real progress in lowering debt. Knetter then brought forward questions from the live audience.
