Hawaiian composer Charles E. King bagan songwriting in his mid life, and composed The Prince of Hawaii, an ambitious project which included his 1915 song, "Song of the Islands".
It's a song which is a core part of the hapa haole tradition—Hawaiian songs with English lyrics that became popular on the mainland US in the early-to-mid 20th century. It's a romantic, melodic piece celebrating the beauty of the Hawaiian islands, and became a standard that was recorded by numerous artists and featured in films like "It's a Wonderful Life."
Here, Paula Jackman's Jazzmasters take it in a new orleans direction, with brass and reeds and all things we love here at the club.
