The North Carolina Flag we know today was adopted in 1885, and standardized in 1991. The flag features two dates that highlight some of North Carolina's many firsts. However, the first date, "May 20, 1775," refers to a document known as the "Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence", which most historians agree is a spurious document.
