After a winter in New York, Theodore Roosevelt returns to the lawless Dakota Badlands. A year has passed since the tragic deaths of his wife and mother on the same night. The 26-year-old widower is still grieving, but the trials of building Elkhorn Ranch have made him stronger, physically and mentally. A greenhorn no more, Roosevelt has proven himself a true cowboy, and he feels right at home in the frontier town of Medora.

However, his second year in the Badlands is fraught with challenges and deadly new threats. From the moment he arrives, Roosevelt is thrown headlong into a range war with his old nemesis, the Marquis de Morés. But the two rivals soon discover they have a common enemy, a shadowy cattle baron from Chicago. With the entire town at stake, Roosevelt forges an unlikely alliance with the Marquis to drive out the Chicago invaders in a battle for the soul of the Badlands.
