This tutorial is made in support of the Little Hats, Big Hearts project by the American Heart Association. Red hats donated to the project are given to all babies born in the month of February at participating hospitals to raise awareness of heart disease and congenital heart defects. Newborn Hat: (Fits 13” circumference)
Magic Circle: In magic circle ring, ch 3, 8 dc into loop, sl st into chain to join.
Round 1: ch 3, 2 dc into each stitch around, sl st into chain to join.
Round 2: ch 3, * 2 dc in first stich, 1 dc in the next * repeat around, sl st into chain to join.
Round 3: ch 3, * 2 dc in first stich, 1 dc in the next, 1 dc in the next *, sl st into chain to join. (Should measure 3.5 – 4 inches in diameter.)
Round 4: ch 3, 1 dc into each stitch around, sl st into chain to join.
Rounds 5+: Repeat round 4 until you reach desired height (4.5-5.5 inches).
Optional: Loosely sc or sl st around to add accent color or decorative edge.
Weave in ends before cutting off yarn to finish hat.

Preemie Hat: (Fits 10”-12” circumference)
Magic Circle: In magic circle ring, ch 3, 8 dc into loop, sl st into chain to join.
Round 1: ch 3, 2 dc into each stitch around, sl st into chain to join.
Round 2: ch 3, * 2 dc in first stich, 1 dc in the next * repeat around, sl st into chain to join. (Should measure 2.5 - 3 inches)
Round 3: ch 3, 1 dc into each stitch around, sl st into chain to join.
Rounds 4+: Repeat round 3 until you reach desired height (3.5-4.5 inches).
Optional: Loosely sc or sl st around to add accent color or decorative edge.
Weave in ends before cutting off yarn to finish hat.

Micro Preemie Hat: (Fits 9-10”circumference)
Magic Circle: In magic circle ring, ch 3, 10 dc into loop, sl st into chain to join.
Round 1: ch 3, 2 dc into each stitch around, sl st into chain to join. (Should measure 2- 2.5 inches)
Round 2: ch 3, 1 dc into each stitch around, sl st into chain to join.
Rounds 3+: Repeat round 2 until you reach desired height (3 – 3.5 inches).
Optional: Loosely sc or sl st around to add accent color or decorative edge.
Weave in ends before cutting off yarn to finish hat.
