Hello Everyone! And welcome to the New Rochelle Train Station!
Located in the city of New Rochelle, New York, approximately 2 miles north of the New York City border. This station is currently one of only 2 stations along the northeast corridor in New York State, with the other being New York-Penn Station
Built by the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad in the 1840s, the first train served the station on December 25th, 1848.
Today, the station is served by Metro-North Railroads New Haven Line & New Canaan Branch trains as well as Amtrak’s Northeast Regional. Amtrak’s Acela and Vermonter Trains, as well as a limited number of Metro-North’s Danbury Branch trains, pass through the station, but as of 2023, none make a scheduled stop here.
When it first opened, the station was served by steam-powered trains, but today is mostly served by electric trains using an overhead catenary, though a limited number of diesel trains do pass through the station as well.
With an average weekday ridership of about 4,000 passengers, this station is one of the busiest stations along the line and gained national attention in the early 1900s when American Entertainer George M. Cohan wrote a song titled 45 Minutes From Broadway, referencing the average travel time by train from the station to the New York City theatre district on Broadway.
The station consists of a 1½ brick-story building, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009, with 4 tracks, one side platform, and one center island platform, with both platforms connected by an overpass, which also provides access to the street level as well.
The side platform serves track 3 and is predominantly used by Metro-North Railroad trains traveling to New York’s Grand Central terminal. Track 1 is not connected to either platform and is predominantly used by Metro-North trains that are not scheduled to stop at the station. The center island platform serves tracks 2 & 4 and is predominantly used by Metro-North Trains traveling to Connecticut and all Amtrak trains, including the Amtrak trains that are not scheduled to stop at the station.
Let's have a look at some of the many trains that travel through the busy and historic New Rochelle Train station!
