Teddy Francis Speaks on Keeping The Spectacle Of The St Lucian Carnival Culture Locally Based

I found it very interesting listening to Teddy everyday on the radio international program, “Vaval Central.” He mentioned something that has been bothering me for the last couple years with the carnival organizers. Which is keeping the significance of the the parties and events around Carnival authentically St. Lucian.
As of the last couple years, we have seen foreign influence taking coming into St Lucia, owning certain fetes and taking over the music on the road… As a result, I believe we are slowly loosing our Lucian carnival to foreign based entities. Naturally, St Lucia has a mixture of French creole musical influence, which stems from the grass roots influence of Trinidadian calypso/soca and zouk/folk heritage over the years to name a few. We should not loose our authenticity due to what may seem “better” and put our national events a week before carnival. There should be a compromise.
