The industrial city of Galați was served by a meter-gauge tram network from 1900 onwards. Starting with the extension to the newly built steelworks, the network was converted to standard gauge in the 1970s. Until the 2000s, the tram played an important role in rush hour traffic between the steelworks, the Danube port and residential areas. Several route closures followed, so that today only a small remnant of the once extensive network remains.
Shortly after the first video from Galați came out in 2018, the line to the steelworks, which was only served once per hour, was discontinued. The other routes, however, have been extensively modernized; eight modern Imperio low-floor cars replaced the Berlin Tatra KT4D in 2021, and ten more have been ordered. The Rotterdam Duewag ZGT6 are still in use, and one car has since been repainted to match the new cars.
