We needed a cost effective way to have a theater backdrop for the Christmas season. Renting one was $700-800 for a 4 day rental plus shipping.
We stumbled upon the idea of using a billboard. We shopped around and used these guys (www.EchodGraphics.com). Full billboard (48'x14') with custom grommets was $450 with free shipping.
This is a great idea for a series, or if you just want a static texture that you can light differently for different effects. You could even plan some sets out and have the elements printed on the billboard and cut them out yourself...Tons of options, entirely inexpensive!
We lit the banner with a LED Ellipsoidal fixture, shuttered to match the size. We also used a 7500 lumen projector to project images of snow and effects on the surface.
