Trout Fishing in Algonquin

1st of all, a disclaimer! That pic is what we were fishing for. We did not find it but had an enjoyable busy am on the lake.

Friends of mine, Al and Vickie, invited me up to their cottage in Algonquin park with the plan to catch lake trout, splake and Brook trout. The middle fish is the result of mixing the laker and the brookie.

You’ve seen Al as he was in this year’s 1st video with me catching brookies opening day. And you may know him also from our maple syrup site, ‘maple syrup guys’, where last year I used the go pro to get some videos showing our month making syrup. Check it out.

Anyway, never having been to the park, I readily accepted their invitation.

It’s just a gorgeous park and because it’s on the boarder of deciduous and coniferous trees, there were plenty of both with the colours just starting to show on the former.

There are so many lakes and each one might have a specific type of fish in it.

One thing I found essential was the fish finder. When dealing with depths of up to 75’ in today’s lake you don’t know where the drop offs are so catching fish would be almost impossible. Guess work is frustrating and usually doesn’t catch fish at those types of depths.

Not being familiar with boat fishing, I felt I had to pay my dues before I understood what I had to do.

Having the correct composition in the pole was a good lesson.

My pole, the ugly stick I use for browns was not as efficient in sending a message to the hook as the pole was too pliable, it bent too much so the message was delayed getting down to the 40’ depth. Conversely, Al’s graphite pole, a less pliable composition got the message down very quickly.

And that resulted in a very busy day for him!

His many catches as i watched was reminiscent of the time I was canoe fishing with my father. It didn’t matter what side of the boat he fished from, he caught them all as I became a spectator. Well that was the same today as Al probably got a sore arm from reeling in the splake.

It was a fun morning in a beautiful setting.

But it was interesting at the end to see how some fishing visitors didn’t have the respect or understanding of their environment as they discarded the remains of their catch in the water at dockside. It’s not a sight that has to be seen .

Back to the cottage for some food and a rest before heading out again!
