This little tune comes from Sammie Walker (1910 - 1987) of Monroe County, Kentucky.
Tuning is GDAE
During Sammie's life, he was a farmer and a blacksmith. He played both fiddle and banjo, and played for dances in the area and appeared on local radio shows. Three generations of the Walkers were musicians, and were well known in the Monroe County area for their music. Sammie learned many of his tunes from his father, Joe Walker (1872- 1932).
The Walkers learned much of their music from the Carver family, especially Henry Carver who in turn credited a fellow named John Gregory, who settled in Fountain Run from the last of the Carver musicians, Noble Carver, a banjo picker who was known all throughout the Cumberland Plateau as "Uncle Bozo." Sammie used to tell Bruce Greene about some of the old fiddlers that he grew up around in Monroe County, one of the greatest which he remembered was Isham Monday (b. 1879) "The best fiddler in the Monroe County area."
