오죽헌은 조선시대 학자인 율곡 이이가 태어난 곳이다. 현재 사용하고 있는 화폐 중에 오천 원권과 오만 원권 화폐의 주인공 두 분이 계시는 곳이 오죽헌이다. 저택 뒤뜰에 검은 대나무가 자라고 있어 ‘오죽헌’이라는 이름이 붙여졌다. 오죽은 까마귀 오(烏)를 사용해 검은 대나무라는 뜻이다. 일반 대나무와 달리 검은색의 얇은 줄기를 가진 독특한 특성으로 조경용으로 많이 쓰인다.
오죽헌에는 600년 된 매화나무가 있다. 이 나무를 율곡매(栗谷梅)로 부른다. 이 꽃나무는 나무 굵기도 굵다. 꽃 또한 흔히 볼 수 없는 중후한 느낌이다. 율곡매화 뜰에는 율곡송(栗谷松)도 청정한 푸른 잎을 자랑하고 있다. 또한 사임당 배롱나무도 있다.
Ojukheon is the birthplace of Yulgok Yi I, a scholar of the Joseon Dynasty. Among the currencies currently in use, Ojukheon is where the two main characters of the 5,000 won and 50,000 won notes are located. Black bamboo grows in the backyard of the mansion, hence the name ‘Ojukheon’. Ojuk means black bamboo using crow oh (오;烏). Unlike general bamboo, it is often used for landscaping due to its unique characteristic of having black thin stems.
There is a 600-year-old plum tree in Ojukheon. This tree is called Yulgokmae(율곡매;栗谷梅). This flowering tree is also thick. Flowers also have a profound feeling that is not often seen. Yulgok Pine (율곡송:栗谷松) also boasts clean green leaves in the Yulgok Plum Garden. There is also a Saimdang cruciferous tree.
