“The Art of Doing Nothing” is an essential skill that all dogs should learn. This exercise teaches dogs to relax, hang out next to you, and be content doing nothing, making it especially useful for anxious, high-energy, or active dogs.
What you need:
• A slip lead, such as the Mendota 3/8” x 6’ slip lead (available at Valor K9 Academy or Amazon)
• No treats or verbal commands are required
How to teach your dog:
1. Start in a quiet room without distractions.
2. Use the slip lead to bring your dog next to you in a heel position.
3. Lift gently on the slip lead until your dog sits (sitting or laying is acceptable). Standing, crawling, or leaning on you is not allowed.
4. If your dog moves out of position, use the slip lead to guide them back.
5. Remain calm and assertive, planting your feet and using leash pressure to communicate.
6. If your dog is restless after 10+ minutes, ensure their basic needs for exercise and mental stimulation are met before trying again.
7. Practice multiple sessions per day (2–3x) until your dog relaxes and understands the exercise.
8. Gradually introduce distractions as your dog masters the skill.
The goal is for your dog to hang out next to you in a relaxed, calm manner—most dogs even fall asleep! Every dog trained at Valor K9 Academy learns this valuable skill, regardless of age, breed, or energy level.
