China has escalated its trade dispute with the United States, announcing additional tariffs of up to 125% on a broad range of American goods starting April 12.
The Chinese Ministry of Commerce issued a stern warning, saying: “If the US insists on continuing to substantially infringe upon China’s rights and interests, China will resolutely counterattack and fight to the end.”
China has also filed a new complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) against the latest tariff measures by the US.
The move comes after the White House clarified on Thursday that total US tariffs on most Chinese imports now stand at 145%—higher than the 125% figure initially cited by President Donald Trump.
The sharp response marks a deepening of tensions, with Beijing making it clear that it will not back down easily. “If the US continues to impose additional tariffs, China will ignore it,” the ministry said.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has weighed in on the escalating US-China trade dispute for the first time, declaring that China is “not afraid” of external pressure.
In a meeting with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez in Beijing, Xi underscored China’s legacy of self-reliance over the past 70 years, asserting that the country does not depend on foreign aid.
