There are many varieties of kilt and kilted skirt for women who want to wear tartan. Whether you wish to express your Scottish heritage by wearing your clan tartan or simply love tartan as a modern fashion expression, you have a LOT of options!

But where to start? What style of kilted skirt is most traditional? How long should a kilted skirt be?

To start, remember that a kilted skirt, a kilt and a Billie skirt are three different things. In Highland Dress, the word 'kilt' is most often used to refer to the men's garment. 'Kilted skirt' is used to differentiate the female garment that is similar in construction to a man's kilt (ie. pleats in the back, a front two-layer apron, and strap and buckle closures at the waist.) A Billie is a fashion mini-skirt with leather closures, but is cut on the bias and usually has a wide waist band.

The length of any of these garments can vary but generally kilted skirts come down to mid-calf - longer equals more formal, naturally. The very longest kilted skirt, the Scottish Host Skirt, reaches to the ankle.

We recommend this length for your first kilted skirt if you are unsure what look you are going for - it is simply the most flexible for crafting a kilted outfit.

HOWEVER as we always say, context is king (or queen in this case). Which kilted skirt is right for you may depend on your lifestyle and the activities you want the garment for. You may even want to consider a man's kilt; more and more women are wearing them these days. So, is it a party skirt for concerts and festivals? A heritage look for the office? Or something elegant and dignified for holiday events like a Saint Andrews Dinner? You just might decide you need more than one kilted skirt, and we won't argue!
