5 Steps To Hit A Perfect One Handed Backhand (Like The Pros!)

Jeff Salzenstein, Former top 100 ATP Player and USTA High-Performance Coach, shares five simple steps to hit a perfect one handed backhand like the pros. In this video, Jeff performs a detailed break down on this stroke and summarizes it into a five step formula.

1. The Grip and Starting Position
a. Get the palm of the hand behind the racquet to find a eastern or semiwestern grip, which will allow you to generate easy topspin on your one hander.
b. Use the off hand to change your grip to the backhand side, and keep the tip of the racquet up while making your first move.

2. First Move
a. Turn your shoulder and load the outside leg. You can either keep the racquet tip up or down as long as you have a compact and smooth swing before hitting the ball.

3. The Backswing
a. Make a solid shoulder turn. When it’s time to swing, step in and let the racquet break the plane in a continuous fashion before hitting the ball.

4. The Contact Point
a. Get your arm straight as your create space away from your body. Keep your off arm very relaxed down by the side pocket as you make contact with the ball out in front.

5. The Finish
a. Most players don’t finish well, especially on their one handed backhand. Focus on finishing high with great extension and your arm straight. Once you’ve reached this position, you can turn the hand and add a little bit of “flair” like the pros.
