The United Nations declared World Humanitarian Day in 2009 to honor 22 aid workers killed in one attack in Baghdad. Today's humanitarian aid landscape is described as "soul searing" and "beyond catastrophic" with 300 million people across 72 countries suffering and desperate. Standing beside these millions everyday with life-saving support are tens of thousands of workers and volunteers from the international humanitarian aid community, facing risk yet doing as much as they can with stretched resources, and great reserves of commitment and compassion. What does this landscape look like right now - from Sudan to Gaza, to Haiti and Myanmar? While autocratic rhetoric and xenophobia grow alongside "replacement" conspiracies that threaten aid delivery and endanger aid workers. Three of the core principles that UUs affirm directly align with humanitarian action. Most days it's much easier to ignore global misery and strife. Sunday we won't. Service is led by Cassie Dakan and Pia Knittle.
