Featuring audio examples of simply replacing 2 metal film resistors with 2 Bulk metal foil resistors in an "O" pad balanced attenuator using custom plastic conductive attenuators. The purpose of the resistors in the "O" pad is control the range of the potentiometer to make the range more usable (-30 db to Wide open vs infinity to wide open) . very surprisingly…… you can hear the difference between the resistors in this position and I contend that its very audible!
The bulk metal foil resistors are used on the Mars rovers and Hubbell telescope for reasons other than sound, they are the only resistors that could stand the temperature variations of sometimes hundreds of degrees and still hold extremely consistent values, and return to those values time and time again after many temperature cycles.
