Das Ritzen ist eng verwandt mit dem Nadelprägen. Im Unterschied zum Nadelprägen wird beim Ritzen die Nadel ohne Oszillation auf das Werkstück gedrückt und axial verfahren. Die Folge ist ein präzises, sauberes Markierbild, bestehend aus einem feinen Linienzug - und das bei einem leisen Betrieb.

Voraussetzung für den Einsatz eines Ritzers ist eine möglichst ebene Oberfläche des zu beschriftenden Materials.

Ritzerköpfe verfügen ebenfalls über zwei Linearachsen (wie Nadelpräger), sind jedoch stabiler gebaut als reine Prägeköpfe. Da beim Nadelritzen höhere Querkräfte auftreten als beim Nadelprägen, enthalten Ritzprägeköpfe anstatt eines Zahnriemenantriebes einen Spindelantrieb.

Scribing (= needle scribing = scribing) is closely related to needle embossing.
