This video will explain what The Discriminant is and how to identify it from the equation for finding roots of a quadratic function. This will allow us to determine the number of roots a quadratic equation has and the nature of the roots of a quadratic function.
The video begins with an introduction to the roots of a quadratic function, what the roots represent on a parabola - where the parabola cuts the x-axis.
We then go on to discuss the various possibilities for roots:
Discriminant greater than 0 giving 2 real roots.
Discriminant equal to 0 giving 2 real and equal roots.
Negative discriminant showing there are no real roots.
We also have a problem solving question that uses the discriminant on a quadratic equation and combines quadratics with inequations.
