Dr. Gus Lorenz of the Univ. of Arkansas discusses the Management of Caterpillar Pests in Soybeans, with particular emphasis on corn earworm (CEW). This is one of the most injurious caterpillar pests in soybeans since it feeds on blooms and pods. It especially affects late-planted beans that are in the appropriate stages of development for significant injury from these worms that are leaving fields of maturing corn. He also presents management options that will cause the soybean crop to be less susceptible to CEW injury. He presents results from research with insecticides that address both efficacy of and residual control from the various products that are available; this significantly affects the cost of control of CEW with products that differ in their residual effect. Of special interest is the efficacy of the newly-available NPV virus (a bioinsecticide) that is specific to CEW and has a separate treatment threshold for its use against CEW.
