A sharp political confrontation has erupted between Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray and Tamil Nadu BJP leader K. Annamalai ahead of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections. The controversy began in Mumbai’s Dharavi area during BJP election campaigning, where statements made by Annamalai regarding Mumbai’s political control and governance triggered strong reactions.
Annamalai stated that Mumbai belongs to the entire nation and highlighted the possibility of BJP control at the Centre, state, and municipal levels. The remarks sparked outrage among Marathi identity-based political groups, leading to an aggressive counterattack by Raj Thackeray.
The situation escalated further during a joint rally held on January 11 in Dadar by Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena and Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena faction. Raj Thackeray launched a scathing verbal attack, invoking historic slogans linked to Marathi asmita and migration politics in Mumbai.
The slogan “Hatao Lungi, Bajao Pungi,” historically associated with Shiv Sena’s movement against migrants, resurfaced in the political discourse. Originally popularized during Bal Thackeray’s era, the slogan symbolized resistance against perceived threats to Marathi employment and cultural dominance. The rhetoric has now expanded to include criticism of both southern and northern Indian migrants.
Annamalai responded by openly challenging the threats and reaffirming plans to visit Mumbai again, intensifying the political standoff. Maharashtra BJP leaders have attempted to de-escalate the issue, wary of the controversy turning into a Marathi-versus-outsider narrative ahead of elections.
With Shiv Sena split into Uddhav Thackeray and Eknath Shinde factions, and the NCP divided between Congress and BJP alliances, the political landscape remains fragmented. The impact of this controversy is expected to become clearer once the BMC election results are announced on January 16.
