Wolverhampton Walk: City Centre【4K】

Located in the West Midlands, roughly 12 miles/20km northwest of Birmingham is the city of Wolverhampton.

It was named after Lady Wulfrun, a 10th century Anglo-Saxon noblewoman who held estates in Staffordshire (the county that Wolverhampton historically belonged to prior to West Midlands becoming a county in 1974).

The city was initially a small market town specialising in the wool trade. The Industrial Revolution turned it into a major centre for coal mining, steel production and lock making. On Queen Square stands an equestrian statue of Prince Albert. This was put up in 1866, around 5 years after the prince consort's death. The unveiling of the statue was attended by Queen Victoria, which was her first public appearance since the funeral. It is alleged that she was so pleased with the statue that she knighted the mayor.

Fun fact: The traffic lights seen from Princess Street (about 6 minutes in) have traditional black and white striped poles. This is to commemorate the location of the first automatic traffic lights in England.

The city is home to the famous football team Wolverhampton Wanderers, commonly referred to as Wolves, currently playing in the Premier League. Their stadium, Molineux, is a short walk away from the church in the north end of the city.
