Hand vices are very useful especially for holding small objects. They are quite affordable and easily obtainable at a flea market. I decided to make this restoration video to show the process of restoring a small hand vise.

In the beginning, I used water electrolysis made of an old notebook power adapter to remove most of the rust. Additionally to get rid of the residual rust I used a small wire brush. The vise was stuck so I used WD-40 rust removal several times to soften the joints and prevent the tool from further rusting. Further cleaning, sanding, and polishing were handled by a wheeled wire and brass brush and sandpapers with different grit sizes (80 - 1000). I renewed the jaws pattern with a triangular file and degreased the tool with technical petrol as preparation for metal painting. At the end, I sprayed the vice with smooth metal paint. The paint is durable and sticks nicely to the tool.

I like to repair and bring old tools back to life and inspire others to create something with their own hands. It is nice to repair old used tools and make them useful and usable again. Hopefully, I inspired you and could help with your projects.

MATERIAL USED:
Electrolysis to remove most of the rust: water and washing soda solution, tool connected to negative and sacrificial steel to positive
Used a small wire brush to clean and remove residual rust
Applied WD-40 to soften the joints
Used a wheel steel wire brush and a brass coarse wire brush for further cleaning and preparation for hand sanding
Used sandpapers with different grit sizes (80, 240, 600, 1000)
Flattened the vise and jaws with files
Filed a new pattern on the jaws with a small triangular file
Cleaned the tool with technical petrol for metal painting
Sprayed the vise with a smooth metal paint
