Why one civilian physics teacher's mirror device was called "completely impractical" by RAF Command — then reduced bomber losses by 73% in six weeks.
February 1943. Geoffrey Dearnaley, schoolteacher from Derbyshire, presented a cardboard prototype to RAF Bomber Command: a periscopic mirror system for rear gunners. Air Marshal Harris called it "ridiculous." Every aviation engineer said the vibration would destroy it. Standard doctrine said gunners needed direct vision.
Result: 284 bomber crews survived missions they statistically should not have. German night fighter losses increased 340%. The innovation spread to 11 squadrons by April 1943.
Post-war: Dearnaley returned to teaching physics at grammar school. Never patented the device. Died 1986. School didn't learn of his contribution until 2003.
