Today’s drumming video was created months ago during a normal “stream of consciousness” drumming session. I have used short clips of this video for Ask Earl Anything. But this is really just how I practice play when I have ten minutes to burn. If you watch a good portion of it you realize that I’m trying to break away from what I know deep in me, but constantly come back to my favorite themes and lick ideas. That’s not a bad thing, but it shows that I need to continue to try to expand my vocabulary. Another thing to note is that this type of drumming opens me up spiritually because it allows me to release my stress and tension in a musical way. Music is one way that I pray to my Lord. Drumming without purpose is a way to meditate and open up positive thoughts and release the painfully parts or stresses of life. I’d love to hear what you think about my stream of consciousness drumming. Should 8 do more of these videos? Please leave a comment.
Stream of consciousness drumming" refers to highly improvisational, flowing, and intricate drumming that mimics the unfiltered flow of thought, famously exemplified by Dream Theater's "Stream of Consciousness", a complex instrumental featuring drummer Mike Portnoy, but also applies to intense, free-form drumming in various styles, from advanced marching percussion pieces to shamanistic rhythms used for altered states, emphasizing deep, intuitive connection.
Spiritual/Healing Drumming: Repetitive, deep drumming rhythms are used to connect with spirit, and access inner wisdom, creating a meditative, flowing experience rather than structured music.
Key Characteristics:
Fluidity & Complexity: Seamless transitions, intricate rhythms, and dense patterns.
Improvisation: Spontaneous creation rather than strict adherence to a composed groove.
Mental State: Requires intense focus, often described as "in the zone" or a trance-like state.
Essentially, it's drumming that bypasses conscious structure and connects directly to instinct or a deeper mental state, resulting in music that feels like a continuous, unpredictable flow.
