Happy 30th anniversary to one of the most important months in all of Phish history! An absolute explosion of boundary pushing improvisation halfway into their Summer 1993 tour. This could act as a guide for getting to know this legendary month. Every minute there is something new to explore and to hear. This is the band at the height of their restless experimentation in a live setting. Not to mention there are so many teases and covers this month, but the wealth of top quality jams still overshadow them with how many there are.
About 2 years in the making (very on and off). Most of the heavy lifting for editing was 2021 and this year. This is more than a regular highlight mix thrown together over a few weekends; Every segment is placed exactly where I felt it should be, countless hours went into making sure everything flowed seamlessly into the next moment, as well as digging through all the footage to find clips that synced up to the audio as best as it could (the Murat Gin 7:38 and Kansas City Bowie 33:18 are good examples that are really fun to watch). I hope all of you enjoy this as much as I do, because these videos literally started as simple highlights that I personally liked, and might steadily turn into full fledged documentaries.
And a reminder, the clips with *real footage* in the corner are the only ones where the audio and video actually go together.
Honestly the only Phish show left I want footage of is 8/13/93
00 Murat Lengthwise 8/13/93 (Beautiful instrumental harmony backing originally a vocal-only song)
42 Murat Llama 8/13/93 (High energy Llama with a little bit of dissonance thrown in)
57 Murat Foam 8/13/93 (Vibrantly colorful Page solo followed by an inspired Trey solo that builds from quiet Metheny style playing, to pristinely nailed shredding)
43 Tampa Gin 8/2/93
34 Murat Gin 8/13/93 (The big boy. Perhaps the most exciting, ear-to-ear grin inducing jam in history? An already really fun venture into the key of G slows back down into the original key, then works its way up to a breakneck speed full band hosey jam, then into another extremely abrasive section and eventually into Ya Mar)
47 Tinley Park Melt 8/14/93
01 Portland Melt 8/26/93 (breathless psychotic jamming with a half step chord change jam in the ending section)
31 Melt 8/9/93 (whooaa boy, easy there)
00 Melt 8/12/93
18 Tweezer 8/9/93 (fun anthemic section eventually followed by a bizarre thumping jam)
27 Tweezer 8/12/93 (one of those funny contrast jams with full on shredding into tongue-in-cheek meandering)
01 Mockingbird "Rollercoaster" Narration 8/7/93
17 I Didn't Know 8/8/93
45 It's Ice 8/11/93 (It's Ice jams are always fun)
13 Tinley Park It's Ice 8/14/93
10 Red Rocks It's Ice 8/20/93
24 Portland It's Ice 8/26/93
37 It's Ice 8/28/93
54 Tinley Park Antelope 8/14/93 (The beginning of a 30 minute suite of constant exploration segueing in and out of 3 different covers)
47 Red Rocks Antelope 8/20/93
08 Salt Lake Stash 8/21/93 (A shift into a beautiful serene easygoing moment that turns into a funnily harsh crashing downward progression)
05 Seattle Stash 8/25/93
57 Louisville Stash 8/15/93 (An epic journey, with some of the best anthemic playing, then into dark eeriness)
14 YEM 8/14/93
26 St. Louis Mike's Song 8/16/93
54 Portland Mike's 12/30/93 (intense Mike's with an arena rock feel)
52 Murat Mike's 8/13/93 (Genius 2nd jam. Heavily musical with the three making great use of their vocal range by rising and falling with lyricless a cappella and ambiguous sounding harmony. Eventually turns into a sort of "Stranglehold" jam even with a quote from Mike)
44 Louisville Tweezer 8/15/93
28 Grand Rapid Weekapaug 8/11/93
58 St. Louis Weekapaug 8/16/93 (Fish fill solo! Machine gun Trey, nifty strumming jam, and nice chord progression to wrap it up)
24 Portland Fee 8/26/93
40 Louisville Fee 8/15/93
11 Murat Bowie 8/13/93 (My personal favorite intro. A boogie jam that comes out of nowhere, then a filler upward chromatic jam that finds its way to the Mango Song, then back to the stark comical reality, then into a jazzy interlude of Magilla, then full on chaos that works its way back to the Bowie closing)
57 Portland Bowie 8/26/93 (those Trey screams are something else........)
52 Kansas City Bowie 8/17/93 (solid jam containing a strong Tweezer Reprise style section)
12 Kansas City Fast Enough For You 8/17/93 (no words to describe this glorious version)
25 Portland Reba 8/26/93
04 St. Louis Reba 8/16/93
46 Auld Lang Syne - Down With Disease debut 12/31/93
43 Worcester Harry Hood 12/31/93 (with 83-93 montage)
46 Vancouver Soundcheck 8/24/93, Credits
