Most of us avoid the thought of sampling when we weave, citing the amount of 'waste' yarn that we would generate, let alone the time that we would waste too.
My answer to these arguments is to ask how much waste you would generate, and how much time you would waste if you started a project entirely on the wrong foot and it ended up as a complete disaster?
Sampling for weaving is NEVER a waste. If you learn something from your sample - whether good or bad, encouraging or discouraging, then the sample has served its purpose. If you can use that scrap of cloth to make something as a result of the sampling, then that is a bonus.
Please, don't avoid the sampling process, it can save a huge amount of materials, time and heartache. It could even go a long way to making sure that you NEVER fall out of love with your Rigid Heddle Loom.
