Camp Utopia (officially A-30 Canadian Infantry Training Centre) was the largest military training facility in New Brunswick during World War II. Located near Pennfield Ridge, it served as a primary preparation site for Canadian troops headed to Europe.
Key Historical Facts
Establishment: Construction began in July 1942, and the camp officially opened as an advanced infantry training centre on August 1, 1942.
Training Role: It specialized in ground assault and infantry training. Over 12,000 troops passed through the unit by its official wartime closing in April 1946.
Combat Preparation: Troops trained here for major Allied operations, including the invasions of Italy and Northwest Europe.
Facility Scale: The camp was a massive self-contained complex featuring:
Two cook houses (each capable of feeding 500 men), a drill hall, and a supply depot.
Extensive live-fire ranges for rifles, Bren guns, Sten guns, mortars, and anti-tank weapons (PIAT and six-pounders).
A "model village" named Ortona used for practicing urban combat.
Medical facilities including a modern hospital and dental clinic.
