The Song:
"Rock and Roll Band" is a song written by Boston lead guitarist and founder Tom Scholz and lead vocalist Brad Delp. The song appears on the band's 1976 self-titled debut. It is one of many songs Scholz worked on in his basement in 1974 and 1975 before Boston got its record contract, five of which eventually appeared on the Boston album. The "Rock and Roll Band" demo was finished in 1974. The album was produced by Tom Scholz and John Boyland and released on Epic records in August of 1976.
" Rock and Roll Band " is a classic from what I would consider the best Rock album ever made and the guitar playing, arrangements and production is the standard. " Rock and Roll Band” is written in the key of Emajor with and the verse revolves around a classic boogie between E and A, just a great overall progression. I was blown away by the Rockman guitar sound on this album, Tom Scholz must be credited with the innovation that shaped the sound of guitar for several decades and you still hear it copied today.
The Video:
The process of final product you are seeing is as follows: I import the original track from iTunes into PreSonus Studio One, tempo map it in PreSonus Studio One, and record all the guitar part as close as I can get them to the original track.
I then buss the guitars to an effects track where I use a send for reverb. On the master I have a limiter, compression and EQ and I usually master in the same workspace. All the guitars are recorded through a Fractal Audio AXE FX III, I generally use the standard Fractal presets and tweak them a bit.
I record the video on my iPhone (with the lesser quality audio), import the video onto my PC desktop where I use DaVinci Resolve to edit the video and replace the iPhone audio with the studio quality audio from PreSonus Studio One. On tunes like this where I use multiple tracks, I use an Apple Mac with more power than the PC for the video. My PC chokes when there are multiple guitars in one video.
The Equipment:
I recorded this track using a 1995 Gibson Les Paul Classic Goldtop, 100% original with no modification but it has been Pleked, I still have the 1960 engraved pickguard. I play the all guitars on this track directly into a Fractal Audio FXIII and then directly out to my DAW (PreSonus Studio One).
