Damon got his humanity back, but his experiencing an emotional rollercoaster, having only partial memories of the past, thinking that Elena was the one who saved him.

While Damon is trying to put the pieces back together, Stefan is remembering that the necklace had a different meaning for whoever owned or touched it. When he had it, it was his gift to Elena to protect her.

But in Damon’s possession it became a symbol of hope to redemption, its magical powers leading not Elena but Bonnie to free and save the older Salvatore brother.

Stefan remembers finding Bonnie years ago in their old family Manoir’s secret hall where Damon was desiccating in his coffin.

Stefan realizes that Bonnie & Damon had no memory of their original meeting point, understanding that by wanting to keep his brother safe and out of reach, he caused them to forget about their first encounter.
The younger Salvatore brother helps Damon to recall his past. Damon had always had a link with ‘the girl’ in the shadow, she actually was the one helping him in becoming a better man,

Stefan and Caroline cannot believe that it took them so long to see that ‘this girl’ was always the one who did put everyone else first. They help Damon uncover the truth.

Damon remembers that the first person he met when he came back to Mystic Falls was actually Bonnie; that night he killed a werewolf to save her life, that night were she became aware of the supernatural. The night when she saw his true nature.

But what was compelled to be forgotten, started to slowly grow into an undestructible bond instead.
Bonnie knew that he was a vampire and still she was not afraid of him, nor did she entirely hate him as everybody else did. She was different from the rest of the group, she truely saw that behind the cold, blood-thirsty, selfish act,; there was a man capable of kindness.

Damon's feelings for Bonnie also became stronger, though he tried to get her off his mind, but his thoughts constantly led him back to the Bennett witch.

At multiple times, it was her who selflessly sacrificed her life to save him, to save them all.

Damon realizes that their “cat & mouse” play was actually covering their genuine feeling for each other.
Bonnie saw behind his facade and saw that he was worth forgiving, that he was worth to be loved for all he was. And he had learned genuinely to care and love her for her.
