GDT Thru Hike Day 15 | Bittersweet Return & The Most Epic Backcountry Toilet

After a week-long break, I’m finally back on the Great Divide Trail, hiking the Aster Lake alternate route toward the infamous Northover Ridge — one of the most stunning (and challenging) sections in Kananaskis Country.

But things feel bittersweet. The Jasper wildfires threaten to change the rest of my thru hike, and mentally, I’m struggling to get back into trail rhythm. Saying goodbye to Tanya after hiking a short stretch together hit harder than expected, and the loneliness sets in quickly.

Thankfully, the day — and my mood — improve with a few small scrambles, breathtaking alpine views, and one unforgettable reward: the most epic backcountry toilet I’ve ever seen.

Located at Aster Lake Backcountry Campground, this toilet scores high on every ‪@MirandaGoesOutside‬ criterion — private, scenic, brand new, and positioned in one of the most beautiful places in the Canadian Rockies. Even with wildfire smoke in the air, this place is absolutely stunning.
