This is a selective neurolysis surgery video about before and after facial paralysis treatment for synkinesis. This procedure can help people with synkinesis to have better control of their muscles.

What is synkinesis ?

synkinesis happens as the consequence of facial paralysis around 6-18 months after facial paralysis
synkinesis is deformation of the face due to unwanted contraction of muscles and this is caused by impaired healing of the nerves and unwanted signaling.

How do you know you have synkinesis ?

unwanted closure of the eye
tightness around the neck
tightness around the neck
impaired smile, down pulling of the mouth corner
dimpling in the chin
deeper nasolabial fold

What you should expect

facial paralysis and synkinesis can happen and impair facial nerve and movements of the face for a life long time if not treated.

What is selective neurolysis surgery ?

in this surgery preoperative assessment can be done to udnerstand which nerves and muscles in your face and introperaviely with microsurgery and subtle electrosimulation (nerve monitoring) nerve can be mapped.
