We toured the USDA Cotton Classing Office in Lubbock, Texas to see why and how they test cotton. We also learned more about what all they test.
Every bale of cotton grown in the U.S. has a sample sent to a classing office so that it can be graded on properties like color, leaf, length, strength, uniformity, micronaire, and extraneous matter. This gives the cotton buyer more confidence in what he is buying, increases demand for U.S. cotton and helps farmers get the best price for their cotton.
Danny Martinez, area director, was our tour guide and teacher - and man was there a lot to see!
