The Nalanda Tradition has been preserved in Tibetan monastic universities for the past thousand years. It forms the basis for the unique Tibetan model of education, with its intensive memorization of texts, precise textual analysis, and logic-based debate.
But what is the Nalanda Tradition? It was born in India before the Buddha ever began his search for truth and exploration of reality. It's basis is the kind of questioning, reasoning, and debate that embodies the principles of skepticism and faithfulness to logic and truth, no matter where they lead.
"But why have I never heard of the Nalanda Tradition?" you ask! Seeing how modern-day India is the perfect host culture for this kind of logic-based education, His Holiness the Dalai Lama has coined this term to emphasize that the intellectual heritage of Tibet is actually, at its roots, nothing but the scholastic child of the Nalanda University, whose ruins now lie in Bihar, India.
