If you like please Subscribe! In 1994, I was playing bass for a band called the Casual Outcast. The leader of the band, Michael Are, had brought in Billy Kemp, a great local guitar player and producer, to look into producing a four song EP for the band. While we were on break, Billy Kemp sat down with a guitar and started Travis picking. This was my first time seeing anyone do this in person. I asked Billy if he could show me how to pick that pattern. He quickly gave me an awesome lesson in about 4 minutes and I jotted down the pattern on a piece of paper. That was the first and last time I was with Billy. I barely knew him and he opened the doors to a new way of playing guitar for me. I spent the next two weeks slowly building up the pattern, one step at a time. Here is the first Travis pattern I learned curtesy of Billy Kemp.
