In the early hours of Wednesday, January 14, 2026, reports say a deadly attack hit Gidado (Ndu area), Donga-Mantung Division, North-West Region—with women and children among the victims, homes burned, and cattle targeted. One of the most disturbing details emerging is that members of the same family were reportedly among those wiped out at first light.
In this Part 1 episode, we go beyond the headline to confront the hard civic reality of the Anglophone war:
when civilians are attacked, civilians become the message.
We also address a major on-air dilemma many viewers raise: the conflict is not only violent—it is contested in language and legitimacy. Some insist on “Cameroon,” others on “Ambazonia,” others on “former British Southern Cameroons.” So when we say “state failure,” which authority are we naming—and who carries obligations to protect civilians?
Finally, we place this tragedy in the bigger picture: external tracks and international attention are losing steam, and internal fragmentation is deepening. If this war ends, it will be because internal actors get serious—not because outsiders suddenly wake up.
Part 2 will examine the “silence after the bullets”: why some tragedies disappear from the national narrative—and what that silence reveals about power and accountability.
In the North-West & South West today, who actually has authority—Yaoundé, armed factions, local power brokers, or nobody?
And if civilians can be erased at 5:30 a.m., what should “authority” even mean in practice?
