The Hague School, a documentary exploring The Second Golden Age of Dutch Painting in the Nineteenth Century. For the first time ever, I was fortunate enough to have my own professional equipment to work with instead of checking out from Elon or relying solely on my phone.
“125 years ago, these paintings were so popular. Why doesn’t anyone know about the Hague School anymore?”
In three days, using a Sony HXR-NX80, iPhone 13, and DJI Mini 2, 8 hours, 26 minutes, and 11 seconds of raw footage was captured around the oldest continuously inhabited European-established city in the United States: St. Augustine, Florida. A year later, that footage was condensed into a 42-minute story that I sincerely hope you gain something from.

My family and I drove down to St. Augustine on July 9th, 2024. For the next three days, I interviewed Don in his house, recorded his explanations of various paintings in the museum, and shot b-roll around the beautiful area. At the time, I had no idea that it would take a year to fully complete the project, but I also had no idea how large of an impact the experience would have on me. In the words of Mr. Robbins, “I’m really moved by art. I didn’t know that that really was the case.”
While there were a lot of challenges along the way- my equipment almost not arriving to Florida on time, getting used to new lights, mics, and other gear, school getting too busy to work on it for nine months, and our car even getting hit by a biker who made too sharp of a turn on our last night busting the headlight- I believe it was all worth it. I even got to see my friend Peter. It has been a busy and long year, but finally, The Hague School in the 19th Century has come back to life in the 21st.
“The Hague School has been forgotten. People loved (Anton Mauve, Hendrik Mesdag, Jan Hendrik Weissenbruch, and so many others back then). Why wouldn’t they love it today? They can still understand the pictures.”

Hartelijk dank voor het kijken. Ik hoop dat deze kunst over vele jaren net zoveel impact op mensen heeft als vele jaren geleden.
