The autumn of 1819 settled over the frontier town of Redridge like a funeral shroud. Nestled in the Appalachian foothills, the settlement consisted of perhaps forty wooden structures, a general store, a blacksmith's forge, and the Red Boar Tavern where the wealthy and powerful gathered to drink, gamble, and remind the common folk of their place.
Clara Mae Hutchins scrubbed the tavern floor on her hands and knees, her calloused fingers raw from lye soap. At nineteen years old, she carried the weight of a hard life in more ways than one. Her body was large, her face round and perpetually flushed from exertion. The tavern owner, a cruel woman named Mrs. Dalton, worked her from dawn until midnight for thin soup and a corner to sleep in the storage cellar.
