The first U.S. Open Championship was conducted at Newport (R.I.) Golf Club during the same week and on the same course as the first U.S. Amateur. Ten professionals and one amateur started the 36-hole, one-day competition. The winner was Horace Rawlins, an English professional who had come over that January to be an assistant at Newport. For his victory, Rawlins won $150, a gold medal and custody of the U.S. Open Trophy for one year.
