I was diagnosed as autistic at 31, and up until that point I carried a very different idea of what autism “meant.” If I’d had a more accurate understanding, it could have saved me years of frustration and feeling misunderstood.
This video is Part 3 of my Friends & Family Education Series: What Does It Mean to Be Autistic?
✨ What you’ll learn in this video:
🧠 An updated, modern understanding of autism beyond stereotypes
🧠 A simple breakdown of the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria (and what it actually looks like in daily life)
🧠 Core autistic traits like sensory differences, direct communication, deep focus, and routines
🧠 Real lived experiences shared by the Mom on the Spectrum community
Autism is not a disorder to “fix.” It’s a naturally occurring neurodevelopmental difference - a valid and valuable form of human diversity. Autistic people experience the world in unique ways, with challenges and strengths that deserve respect, support, and acceptance.
🌱 If you’re a friend, parent, or partner of an autistic person: this video will help you deepen connection, reduce misunderstandings, and build more authentic relationships.
💬 If you’re autistic yourself: you’ll hear community voices that validate and expand on your own lived experience.
