The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) has proposed a new initiative called 'Net Half Price' to provide affordable internet access to over 14 million state welfare cardholders. The plan offers 40GB of high-speed data for 160 Baht per month, including tax, for three billing cycles. This proposal will be presented to the Cabinet on October 28th, aiming to bridge the digital divide and promote equal educational opportunities.
The NBTC negotiated with mobile operators to reduce the cost of mobile internet services, aiming to benefit low-income groups. The project's budget will be supported by the Research and Development Fund for Broadcasting, Television, and Telecommunications for Public Interest.
However, a significant challenge remains as many state welfare cardholders still use 2G mobile phones, which are incompatible with internet usage. The government is addressing this issue by negotiating with mobile operators to support the upgrade of devices to 4G or 5G, ensuring better internet access for all.
