The National Police Commissioner, General Fannie Masemola, says more National Intervention Unit (NIU) members will be deployed to Mthatha to fight extortion and other rampant crimes in the area. Masemola spoke to the media in Mthatha in the Eastern Cape. Last week, three suspected extortionists were gunned down at a NIU police base in the city, when they tried to confront police officers. On Friday, another NIU member was shot at while on his way to work but he survived the attack.
