Puthari is a harvest festival that lights up the villages of Kodagu, Karnataka. The celebration begins with families gathering to clean their homes and decorate the front doors with fresh mango and jackfruit leaves, rangoli made from rice. A special “puthari” (new rice) is harvested and offered to the family deity, symbolizing gratitude for a bountiful crop.
The air is filled with the aroma of freshly cooked dishes steaming bowls of rice mixed with ghee and milk(paysa), puthari kalanji (yam) and thambutt.
In the evening, the village square comes alive with a torchlit procession, where the newly harvested rice is carried on a decorated “pallak” (bamboo tray) and offered to the elders for blessings. The night culminates in a communal feast, laughter spilling over the clinking of plates, and stories of ancestors passed down through generations.
Puthari therefore, is not just a celebration of the harvest it’s a reaffirmation of community, tradition, and the promise of a fruitful year ahead.
