I realised on a tuition call last week that there was no longer any reference anywhere on our YouTube channel to contouring which is THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT STEP of any edit - Contouring is another way of saying Dodge and Burn and today, we're going to cover an advanced dodge and burn photoshop tutorial without touching the dodge or the burn tool. Dodge and burn has been a thing since film days when photographers worked this technique in the darkrooms. It came over to digital with the straight dodge and burn tools, but their use is destructive - it directly alters pixel data. Instead, we use a layered technique to apply the same theory in a non-destructive way.
